Protecting our natural heritage

Sometimes conservation isn’t about doing more; it’s about waiting and understanding the intricate balance of nature. We highlight the critical issues impacting our biodiversity and showcase local efforts to protect it for future generations.

Preserving our ecosystems

The reduction of native biodiversity in and along rivers and streams weakens our ecosystems’ ability to resist invasive species. This loss affects the natural resilience of our environment. We must act to restore and protect these vital habitats.

Addressing threats to nature

The compaction of soils and increases in impervious surfaces due to development impact groundwater and surface water flows and water quality. This also increases the frequency and severity of damaging flooding, threatening both natural habitats and communities.

Fostering ecological connections

The loss of connectivity between ecological communities reduces the value of greenspaces to adjacent communities for recreation, health, education, and property value. Our initiatives focus on building pollinator pathways and creating spaces for birds and mammals, such as the two prime examples of pollinator gardens in Centennial Park.
