We are facing significant challenges: two consecutive quarters of negative growth, high unemployment, especially among youth, and soaring inflation, particularly on food. The absence of a CUSMA deal adds further pressure. These factors, combined with inadequate reserves and the costs associated with governance changes at the Niagara Region, mean it is far too early to declare fiscal victory or let our guard down.

With 50 years as a Chartered Accountant, I have experienced and managed through eight minor recessions, one Great Recession, one COVID recession, and one Trump Recession. This extensive background provides me with a unique perspective on navigating challenging economic climates. My goal has always been to cut waste from repetition and redundancy, ensuring every dollar works efficiently for our community.

My six years on the Niagara Transit Commission, coupled with experience on four Pelham budgets and two Niagara Region budgets, have given me a profound understanding of municipal finance. In 18 months as a Niagara Regional Councillor and member of all major committees and commissions, I gained valuable insight into the intricacies of regional governance, including models like Niagara Transit operating as a Municipal Service Board – a likely model for water and wastewater governance. My experience as an employer for 35 years further reinforces my practical approach to fiscal responsibility.
